This early Victorian or late Empire rosewood secretary is truly elegant.  The cabinet comes apart in 3 pieces for ease in moving.  Notice the large proud cornice.  The desk has 2 glass doors with pierced carvings along the top of each.  The doors retain their original glass, working lock and key.  Inside are 3 adjustable shelves.  Check out the 7 small decorative cubbies below the lower shelf.  Below the door are 3 small hand-dovetailed drawers with the center drawer retaining its original working lock and the side drawers having their original wood turned pulls.  The slant lid drops down to reveal a writing surface covered in a replaced burgundy felt.  On either side are areas to store inkbottles, etc.  Notice the brass latch, which opens up to reveal another storage compartment for your papers and three more, smaller hand-dovetailed drawers.  The secretary base has 2 larger hand-dovetailed drawers, each having their original working locks.  There are 2 doors with recessed panels, which also retain their working locks.  Inside is a large storage compartment.  It appears that there was a shelf at one time, but long removed.  The cabinet has a scalloped skirt or apron between the block feet.  The sides of the secretary base are also recessed paneled.  The rosewood graining on this piece of furniture is extremely desirable – very pronounced and dramatic.  The finish is in excellent condition.  What a beautiful statement in any home!
