Mahogany Side by Side Secretary

This mahogany combination desk and bookcase is referred to as a “side by side”.  The left side has a bowed glass bookcase.  The door retains its original cast brass latch, lock and key.  Inside are 4 adjustable shelves.  Notice the bird’s eye maple back panel.  The right side has a unique curio top with a small bowed glass cabinet flanked by 2 small beveled glass mirrors.  Check out the unique stylized shell carving under the small door and the applied carvings resembling vines and leaves.  Below is an intricately inlaid fall front door panel.  The inlay is of various exotic woods with a scene of a male portrait and surrounded by quill feather pens, an urn and scrolling vine, leaves and flowers.  Some of the flowers are inlaid with mother of pearl.  The panel has its original working lock and a key.  The lid drops down to reveal a writing surface.  Inside are 2 small drawers with fancy cast brass pulls, 15 small cubbies of various sizes for sorting and 2 pen/pencil trays.  There are 3 drawers below with line-inlaid fronts and original fancy cast brass pulls and working locks.  Check out how the top 2 drawers are serpentine shaped – very clever design.  The secretary rests on carved feet and retains their original casters.  If you look very carefully, you will notice that a back splash was originally affixed to the top of the cabinet.  It has been removed a long time and does not distract from its dramatic presence.  The finish is in excellent condition having a very deep rich color and patina.  What a practical, yet unique piece.
