Mahogany Roll Top desk, Secretary, Victorian

What a killer roll top secretary!  The attention to detail and craftsmanship is superb!  Check out the flame mahogany graining throughout the desk.  Notice how the mahogany was methodically applied to each individual tambour or slat resulting in the dramatic design on the roll top – true artistry!  This desk comes apart in 7 pieces for ease in transporting and getting up staircases, etc.  The top crest is beautifully pierced carved having designs of flowers and leaves.  There are 4 large delicately turned finials.  The top section of the desk has an open center compartment with a shelf.  On either side is a shapely recessed paneled door.  Each door has a brass escutcheon and working lock with a key.  Inside, each has a fixed shelf.  Notice the applied delicate carvings on either side of the doors.  Below are 3 small hand dovetailed drawers with their original carved wood and bone pulls and recessed paneled drawer fronts.  The roll top opens and closes smoothly and has its original working lock with key.  Notice the large fancy carved wooden and bone pulls.  Inside the roll is a slide out writing surface.  In the center of the surface is an inset panel of brown leather with gold tooling.  This panel is designed to lift up and has back supports maintaining it at an angle for writing or reading purposes.  The interior has 6 small hand dovetailed drawers and 12 vertical file compartments.  In the center is a large cubby with a mirror back – perfect for reflecting light from your candle or kerosene lamp!  Please note that the writing surface is slightly higher than most.  This surface measures 34″ whereas most desk surface heights are 31″ tall.  The desk base has one long hand dovetailed drawer over 3 paneled doors.  Notice the recessed center door in the middle.  All have their original working locks, key and bone escutcheons.  Inside the left side door are 3 drawers and inside the right door are 3 shelves.  The finish on this secretary is incredible – very rich and inviting.  One carving on the base has been repaired.  This is only noticeable upon close inspection.  What a fabulous, useful desk for your home or office.
