This late Empire or early Victorian secretary is of exceptional quality with many unique details. The desk comes apart in 4 sections for ease in moving and taking up staircases. There are 4 delicately; carved finials on the top. There appears no other crest or carvings missing, making these unique in this use and placement. Almost every flat surface on this secretary is covered in dramatic flame mahogany! The crest has an applied carving, which was enlarged and repeated on the bottom door fronts. Notice the unique trim turnings on the sides and middle of the top and bottom doors. The unusual shaped mirrored doors have their original working locks and a key. The left side mirror appears original having minor silvering loss along the bottom edge. The right side is likely a replacement. Inside each door are 3 adjustable shelves. Check out the center section with the 3 hand-dovetailed drawers. The center drawer pulls out to reveal a felt covered lift up, hinged writing surface with storage underneath. On the right are 3 small cubbies designed to hold inkwells, etc. There is a pencil/pen compartment, also having additional storage. The lock appears to be a later replacement. The cabinet base has recessed paneled arched doors, each having their original working lock. Inside each door is a single shelf. The desk rests on casters. Please be aware that flame mahogany is applied using strategically chosen, carefully cut and artistically placed veneers. Hence, there are some small veneer chips throughout, but nothing distracting or offensive. The finish is in very good to excellent condition having a most desirable color and patina. There is a 1.5″ piece of carved trim missing on the side of the right drawer.
