Although the sofa is not labeled, we were able to locate a nearly identical labeled sofa at Hirschl and Adler of New York, which may be viewed on their website. In addition, the identical sofa is in the collection of the Muscatine Art Center, Iowa and they attribute their sofa to Meeks as well. The dramatic graining of the mahogany and the sweeping shape of the yoke back and enveloping curvature of the frame are desirable classical elements. Notice the clever use of inset fabric on the front of the arms. The serpentine shaped seat adds to its elegance. One of the more prominent features is the carved elements below the armrests - subtle, but distinct. They are reminiscent of arching swans heads or fans unfolding. The frame and finish is in excellent condition. The present fabric covering requires replacement. Upon inspection underneath, which required removing the scrim or fabric, we see where the inside edges of the seat rail were professionally reinforced by a previous owner when last upholstered. The webbing and springs are in excellent condition. The sofa's castors are not original. Amazingly this sofa is not only a work of are, but is extremely comfortable. Circa: 1830's Measurements: 38"h X 86"w X 32"d Condition: Excellent Stock Number: N48 Price: $12,500.00
